Forest Health Protection—Emerald Ash Borer

EAB Surveys & Survey Protocols

EAB survey photograph

You'll find the latest Forest Service-sponsored EAB survey protocols here. The two recommended data forms, for detection tree/destructive sampling surveys and visual surveys, are included in the protocols. The protocols describe in detail how to conduct surveys for EAB. (This information intended for formal cooperators.)

The document "Using Girdled Trap Trees Effectively for Emerald Ash Borer Detection, Delimitation and Survey" is an excellent reference for trap-tree establishment and for surveyors peeling trees looking for signs of EAB larval activity.

The Emerald Ash Borer Cooperative Detection Program 2006 Survey Report (3MB) for Forest Service and State sponsored surveys is available for the states of Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois Indiana, and Wisconsin.
