Ice Storms

Landowner Assistance— January 5-10, 1998

Landowerns meetingUpdate: Overnight on December 11-12, 2008, the Northeast suffered its worst ice storm in a decade. The storm affected parts of Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York. After the storm in January 1998, we established this website to provide information to aid in the recovery from the storm. It has been updated to help with this year's storm.

Stewardship

Non-industrial landowners can apply under this program to develop or revise management plans for their land. A forester or other natural resources professional must approve the plan for the landowner to qualify for cost-share funds.

Stewardship Incentive Program (SIP)

SIP helps landowners pay a portion of the cost for management activities that are outlined in their management plan. These are examples of activities that may qualify: (1) assessing ice storm damage, (2) clearing roads and trails of debris from damaged trees, (3) identifying and removing hazardous trees, (4) harvesting damaged wood, and (5) improving wildlife habitat.

Urban and Community Forestry (U&CF)

This program funds projects to inventory, assess, plan for, and manage community natural resources. Communities or nonprofit groups may be eligible for grants to: (1) assess storm damage, (2) find and repair or remove hazardous trees, (3) identify possible tree-planting sites, (4) make long-term recovery plans, and (5) replace lost trees.

Rural Development Program

This program links people and forests to strengthen the economic health of communities over the long term. It brings communities, groups, and businesses together to create diversified economic activity based on forest resources.

Forest Health Management

This program promotes practices that restore and improve forest health. It monitors forest health to identify forest at risk from insects, diseases, air pollution, and other impacts.
