Cumulative Watershed Effects of Fuel Management

An Eastern Synthesis

Due to the importance of fuel management on National Forest and private lands, there are a variety of needs for a synthesis of the current state-of-knowledge on the effects of fuel management activities on watershed processes and health. A coordinated effort for the western United States is nearing completion and is available on-line and will be published by the Rocky Mountain Research Station as a Government Technical Report (GTR). As there are corresponding issues in the east, a parallel initiative on behalf of the eastern United States is being coordinated by a steering group composed of the Southern Research Station, RMRS, Region 8, Region 9 and the Northeastern Area. Many thanks are extended to the numerous scientists who are contributing their time, effort and knowledge to this project.

The intent of this project is to prepare a volume to synthesize of the state-of-knowledge regarding the cumulative effects of fuel management at the watershed scale. The audience for the publication is primarily land managers involved in fuel management, assessment and planning. One of the objectives of the synthesis is to provide resource managers and specialists with a compendium of knowledge that they can use to evaluate the impacts of proposed fuel treatment projects.

The volume is organized into 16 chapters reflecting the various aspects of cumulative watershed effects analyses and fuel management. When work on the project is completed, the volume will be published as a GTR by the Southern Research Station. As the authors finalize their peer reviewed work, the chapters will be posted on this site.

The information for this volume is in draft form and will be edited before publication.
