Recent Developments
The Federal Highlands Conservation Act of 2004 authorizes $10 million a year over 10 years to help protect the Highlands, a region stretching from western Connecticut across New York's Lower Hudson Valley, northern New Jersey, and into east-central Pennsylvania. All four states may apply for money the federal government sets aside to help them buy land.

| To date, $5,221,000 has been appropriated for land conservation partnership projects in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. |
- In Federal FY 2007, $1,971,000 was appropriated.
- In Federal FY 2008, $1,750,000 was appropriated.
- In Federal FY 2009, $1,500,000 was appropriated.

An additional $1 million a year is authorized over the next 10 years for USDA Forest Service programs, including technical assistance, in the Highlands Region. To date, no funds have been appropriated.
