What's New
The Northeastern Area was honored to present an Upper Mississippi Forest
Partnership display at the White House Conference on Cooperative Conservation
held August 29-31, 2005 in St. Louis, Missouri. Over a thousand federal,
state, local, non-profit, and corporation conservation attendeded this historic
conference. The purpose of the conference was to “strengthen shared
governance and citizen stewardship.” This theme certainly embodies
the essence of the Upper Mississippi Forest Partnership—by working
together in a focused manner across the region forest restoration can positively
impact the water quality of the region.

- Purpose of GIS Analysis
The Mississippi River is the largest floodplain river ecosystem in North America and the world’s third largest, draining nearly 2/3 of the continental United States. The Upper Mississippi River Basin is a major sub-watershed of the Mississippi, draining approximately 189,000 square miles in portions of 6 Midwest states. Because of its size, this GIS analysis was undertaken to help identify high priority areas for riparian reforestation and establishing forestland land to improve watershed health by reducing erosion and water yield, to promote water quality protection by identifying existing forest lands of particular importance in maintaining water quality, and to help the Partnership identify potential focus areas for bird conservation efforts. The analysis was conducted by the USGS, Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center, under guidance from the Upper Mississippi Forest Partnership steering committee.
