History of Organization
Trees and forests can play an important role in solving ecological problems
in the Upper Mississippi River Watershed. State Foresters from Illinois,
Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin and the Forest Service’s
Northeastern Area realized they could address the watershed’s problems
more effectively by working together so they formed the Upper Mississippi
River Forestry Partnership. In FY 2004, the Partnership:
- Drafted a Strategic Action Plan to strengthen coordination among
state forestry agencies, link State Foresters directly to agencies
and groups working on watershed issues, and direct actions to
specific strategic goals.
- Provided support to the State of Wisconsin to
staff a Watershed Coordinator to implement the Upper Mississippi
River Forestry Partnership action plan.
- Formed a partnership
to incorporate watershed education through television weather
broadcasts and a web site in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, educating
viewers on watershed health and how trees improve watershed condition.
- Hosted
the Upper Mississippi River Forest Partnership Sustainable Forest
Regional Roundtable on March 23-24, 2004 in La Crosse, WI. The
Roundtable also brought visibility to the Forestry Partnership from a
broad spectrum of forestry agencies, organizations, and landowners.
- Worked
with key partners to select and fund 10 projects totaling $300,000
to further Partnership goals for migratory bird habitat enhancement.
